Ayyam Ibrahim May 13, 2011 Chemistry 1M Determination of Allura Red Concentration in Mouthwash Abstract: Allura red, a dye in some commercial products (mouthwash), was measured using a Spec 20 spectrometer; in order to determine the wavelength of light absorbed most strongly by allura red. With the calculated absorbance values, a Beer’s Law plot of absorbance versus concentration was constructed. This lab was divided into three parts; in the first part the (λmax) was found to be 505 nm. In part 2, a number of volumetric dilutions were made in order to find transmittance and absorbance for various known concentrations of Allura red. Also, these calculations were used to make a Beer’s law plot; the slope of the plot is 24,840nm. Finally, in part 3, it was required to determine the concentration of Allura red in mouthwash, which was determined to be 1.45E-45M. Results:
