Light is a form of energy known as electromagnetic radiation Travels in rhythmic waves 3 What is Light? The waves that can be detected by the human eye in various colors is called visible light When light meets matter it may be Reflected Transmitted Absorbed Reflected light Absorbed light Light Chloroplast Transmitted light Light Meets Matter 4 Photons Light consists of discrete particles called photons Each photon has a fixed amount of energy Photons When a photon reaches a molecule Photon may be reflected Photon may pass through Photon my be absorbed If absorbed, the pigment will acquire the energy of the photon Molecule moves from the ground state to the excited state 5 Photons Acquiring the energy bumps an electron to a higher shell This makes the electron less attracted to the nucleus and therefore the molecule becomes more...
