53:050 Natural Environmental Systems Solutions to Homework No. 2 – Spring 2011 1. (a) The goal was to protect water quality (fishable) and public health (swimmable). The legislation, called by some the Clean Water Act, is the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). (b) NPDES permits limit the amount of pollution that can be discharged, thus maintaining or improving water quality (help make receiving water “fishable and swimmable”). 2. Davis & Masten problem 2-2. The number of protons determines the atomic number. This element has 17 protons so its atomic number is 17. The element with an atomic number of 17 is chlorine. 3. Balance the following chemical reactions: (a) C 12 H 22 O 11 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O Balance C’s: C 12 H 22 O 11 + O 2 12CO 2 + H 2 O Balance H’s: C 12 H 22 O 11 + O 2 12CO 2 + 11H 2 O Balance O’s: C 12 H 22 O 11 + 12O 2 12CO 2 + 11H 2 O (b) Cl 2 + KOH KCl + KClO 3 + H 2 O This is an oxidation-reduction reaction that is not trivial to balance! Although it is possible to do it by trial and error, it is “easier” to balance e
