Week 3 Fossils and Horse Evolution LS1 WEEK 3 DEMO [Exercises 1 and 3 are described in the handout your TA will provide] EXERCISE 2: QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENTS In the section you ʼ ll record data on the skull, dental, and limb morphology of the fossil animals. Record your data on the data sheets provided; when you are finished type your results into the Excel spreadsheet and start discussing amongst your group and answering the questions at the end of each section. When all groups have their data, your TA will reconvene the class for discussion. Group A. Limb Characters. 1. Measure the length of the central metatarsal ( Figure 3.7 ). 2. Measure the width of the central metatarsal (at the midpoint along the length of the bone) ( Figure 3.8 ). 3. Calculate the relative stoutness of the limb (the width/length ratio). 4a. Count the number of toes in the hind limb. 4b. Examine the position of each toe; would it have touched the ground in the living animal? 4c. Is there a hoof present on any of the toes? 5a.
