Sani Choocherd Book assignment Favorite character in Goal Jonah is my favorite character in “The Goal”, because of his teaching method. The way that he helped Alex impressed me. He guides Alex about the problems that Alex is facing by using Socratic approach, which use reasons to solve problems. Although Jonah knows all the answer, he does not tell exactly what Alex has to do. He rather uses logic that makes Alex come up with answers. Jonah does not only help Alex’s company to improve productivity to achieve the goal, but he also help develop Alex’s thought process of how to run the plant. What I learned the most from Jonah is that he guide people to solve problem by looking at the cause of the problems not the symptoms. One of my most favorite chapters is when they meet at the airport. Favorite character in Joe’s Garage My favorite character in Joe’s Garage is Sandy. First of all, she has expertise in the field that she works as a ME. She is a good problem solver and always ready for unexpected. Another reason is that even though he does not know some operating management principle as much as Ralph does, she does not hesitate to learn and share ideas between both of them. She is friendly and open mind and willing to learn new things from Ralph. From reading the book I could feel that she is someone that anybody would like to talk to. I am really convinced that people that have this kind of characteristics can be successful person in the future. Three main ideas of “The Goal” The idea of three terms, which are throughput, inventory, and operation expenses that are the measurement tools to help company to achieve the goal of making money. Throughput is the r ate that we make money through sales. Inventory is all the money that a company purchases things that use in the production. Operation expense is all the money the system spends in order to turn inventory into throughput. All three terms are basically called Theory of Constraint, which the author of the book introduced to help people have different perspective about how to improve effectiveness of the company. This theory has been introduced through the characters, Jonah and Alex, to find the way to make a company survive. The idea of balancing between the bottleneck and non-bottleneck to increase throughput and decrease inventory is interesting. The idea changed my perspective about the bottleneck concept. Before I have read this book, I thought the bottleneck should be eliminated as much as possible in the manufacturing plant. The bottleneck is where the demand that places to machine
