Quality is a term that has had corporations and smaller companies concentrating on for a very long time. According to the Merriam-Webster website, quality is defined as “degree of excellence, a distinguishing attribute, an inherent feature” (2011). This definition pushes companies to deliver the highest quality of product possible to consumers. Although quality has many meanings, consumers rate the degree of quality of products to determine whether or not that product should be purchased. Several men excelled in the study of quality and pioneered the phrase “high quality” to help companies provide excellent products. This paper will discuss one particular pioneer of quality, Joseph Juran, and attempt to explain the impact Juran had on the marketing of quality. Quality will also be discussed in a way to give a clear understanding regarding why it is so important for companies. Elements of Quality Quality is an area that companies must focus attention on. Without quality, there would be no reason to concentrate on competition between companies or caring about what the consumer needs. Quality occurs when a company produces what a customer wants while trying to reduce errors. Quality is a process that allows the company to improve constantly on what products are made or manufactured by that company to benefit the consumer. The Organized Change Consultancy (2010) website states a condensed version of all different philosophers’ ideas of quality, “focus on quality and prevention of problems, cooperate with suppliers and customers, continuously improve and eliminate wasteful steps, encourage the proper climate and empower employees, use the problem solving/problem prevention cycle, use measurements to back decisions.”
