Unformatted text preview: 1 1 Information: What is Matter? (Does it matter?) Matter is anything that has mass and volume (occupies space). The density of a piece of matter is the ratio of its mass to its volume (d = m/V). Matter can be classified as elements , compounds , (pure) substances , mixtures , and solutions . Matter has physical and chemical properties . Matter can undergo physical and chemical changes . Matter consists of atoms and molecules . Molecules are atoms bonded together. 2 Scientific Terminology Is very precise. What is that substance? Oily dirt is a good answer on the street. In the science lab, oily dirt is not a substance it is a mixture. It is not pure, it has several components. 2 3 Pure Substance A (pure) substance is any pure matter that cannot be separated into components by physical methods. A substance has a uniform composition, the composition always is the same. 4 Elements An element is a substance that cannot be decomposed or separated into other substances by any means (physical or chemical) except nuclear reactions. All the known elements are listed on the Periodic Table: e.g. hydrogen, helium, oxygen, nitrogen, silver. A nuclear reaction on the sun converts hydrogen to helium, for example. 3 5 Only 6 are atomic gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn Only 9 elements exist as molecules Gases: H 2 , O 2 , N 2 , F 2 , Cl 2 Liquid: Br 2 Solid: I 2 , S 8 , Se 8 Most are atoms bonded together in solids Elements Exist as Atoms, Molecules, and Solids 6 Compounds A compound is a pure substance formed from 2 or more elements. The atoms of the elements bond together to form molecules. Water (H & O), sugar (C, H, & O) H 2 O, C 6 H 12 O 6 (glucose) CO (carbon monoxide) O 2 is not a compound it is an element! 4 7 Mixtures and Solutions A mixture consists of two or more pure substances. May be homogeneous or heterogeneous....
