PSY 101 DE HW#3 1 Define the two types of conditioning – classical and operant. Are these examples of behavioral or cognitive learning? Classical conditioning is a form of behavior learning in which a previously neutral stimulus acquires the power to elicit the same innate reflex produced by another stimulus. Operant conditioning is a form of behavior learning in which the probability of a response is charged by it consequences that is, by the stimuli that follow the response. 2 Explain the process of how Pavlov trained his dogs to salivate to the sound of a tone. Include the terms UCS, UCR, CS, CR in your explanation. 3 Define generalization, discrimination, and extinction. How do we know that even if a behavior becomes extinct it is not forgotten forever? Generalization is the extension of a learned response to stimuli that are similar to the conditioned stimulus. Discrimination is learning to respond to a particular stimulus but not to stimuli that are similar. Extinction is the weakening of a conditioned response in the absence of an unconditional stimulus. We know that extinction does not involve a complete elimination of the response from the organism’s behavior repertoire. Extinction only suppresses the conditioned response. 4 What did John Watson do to little Albert and why would it be considered unethical today? Watson demonstrated conditioned fear in a human.
