In some cases, knowledge about the random process that generates the discrete random variable allows us to represent the probability distribution using a formula. In this section, we will discuss the case of a binomial random variable and the binomial process (or binomial experiment) that generates it. We will then discuss the mathematical formula for computing binomial probabilities. Finally, we will learn to use binomial tables for looking up binomial probabilities (rather than using the mathematical formula for computing probabilities). Characteristics of a binomial process : 1. It consists of n identical trials 2. Two outcomes are possible on any one trial. One is called a ‘success’ and one is called a ‘failure’. 3. The probability of success on a single trial is denoted by the letter p . So, 1 - p is the probability of a failure on any one trial. p does not change from one trial to the next 4. The trials are independent. 86
