PSY 101 DE HW4 Psychological Disorders 1 How does the modern medical model view psychological disorders, and how is this different from what people believed thousands of years ago? It is viewed as a “disease”. In the ancient world people assumed that supernatural powers were everywhere. Accounting for good fortune, disease, and disaster. Psychopathology was believed to be caused by demons and spirits that had taken possession of the person’s mind and body. 2 What is the DSM and how does it classify mental disorders? DSM is the acronym for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Classifies disorders by their mental and behavioral symptoms. 3 What are the major mood disorders? With the second mood disorder, what are the two polar opposites of its symptoms? Bipolar disorder and Major depression, Mania and depression are the two polar opposites. 4 What is the acronym given to the type of depression that is believed to be caused by sunlight deprivation? SAD. 5 When it comes to depression, are some people more at risk than others? Who? Women have higher depression rates than do men. 6 List and define the major anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder – Characterized by persistent and pervasive feelings of anxiety, without any external cause Panic disorder – Marked by panic attacks that have no connection to events in a person’s present experience
