Team Roles AS YOU READ IN MODULE 18, people can play positive or negative roles in teams. The left-hand column below shows positive roles / actions that help a team meet its task goals . The middle column lists roles / actions that help a team grow be- yond the forming and storming stages. These team-mainten- ance roles help a team build loyalty, resolve conflicts, and run smoothly. The right-hand column shows roles / actions that hurt the group’s product and process. Functional Roles Dysfunctional Roles Task-Facilitating Roles Team-Maintenance Roles Self-Oriented Roles Initiator: Gets team started on a line of thinking. Encourager: Draws out other members by showing verbal and nonverbal support, praise, or agreement. Controller: Knows how the work should be done. Likes getting work done by be- ing the “voice of authority” on the team. Info giver or seeker: Offers or seeks info relevant to questions facing team. Identifies gaps in team’s knowledge or provides info the team can use.

Withdrawer: Prevents disagreements by being silent or staying away from team meetings and not helping with the work. Coordinator: Plans work, gives direc-tions, and fits together contributions of group members. Compromiser: Opens discussion of interpersonal problems on team; suggests ways to solve them. Of-fers to yield on a point Attention seeker: Seeks to satisfy her / his high need for recognition by keeping the team on their toes. Evaluator: Compares teams work to its standards and suggests procedures that will move team closer to its goals. Active listener: Shows group members that they have been heard and that their ideas are being taken seriously.
