Dao Nguyen Sociology 101 Essay 2 May 26, 2010 Discovering Poverty in the World In reality, in our lives, poverty scale has many historical causes, such as colonialism, slavery, war and conquest. Those are main reasons why the poverty exists in our world. For example, in the past, many nations of Europe faced by devastating wars, such as World Wars I and II, were reduced to bare poverty, where people were reduced to living on handouts and charity, barely surviving. Within decades they had brought themselves up in terms of real domestic income, to become thriving and influential modern nations. They had improved themselves by many ways in many fields, like education, living conditions, entertainment, etc. However, at the macro or national level, a low GDP (gross domestic product) is not the poverty itself; it is the symptom of poverty, as a social problem. Otherwise, poverty theory claims that outside forces prevent the individual or group from achieving a desired goal or certain aspect of living. Most people would like to be involved in an upward mobility action-in order to have a better quality of life for themselves or their families. In fact, the elements that usually prevent this upward mobility from occurring are the limits that the upper classes place on certain aspects of the chain, such as education, living conditions, jobs, etc. Specifically, lower classes usually work most of time to support themselves. If they want to survive in this society, they have to find money and of course they need jobs. Therefore, it’s hard for them to finish their education, so they
