Michael Ross Baker II POLI 201 Professor McAtee April 8, 2010 Human Nature and How It Influences Political Beliefs An individual’s political beliefs not only affect the way that person perceives the world, but influences the manner in which they feel different agents in the world, albeit people or institutions or nations, should and should not interact. For many, political beliefs seem to be a set of policies or ideas that people feel should be applied to society in order to make it operate more efficiently. However, on a personal level, I feel that political beliefs are a lot more than policies and ideals that I do or do not personally agree with based on personal or educational experience. Political beliefs deal with the essence of human nature, how people interact with each other, and how society can be made more efficient. In understanding the nature of individuals and their interactions with others, we’ve determined as a society that some form of ruling body is necessary to protect those rights we as people hold sacred. For that reason, we each as individuals form political beliefs as a way to describe how we would like that ruling body should be organized to do its job. For me, one of the most formative moments for my political beliefs was a high school debate for my history class on the differing perspective that two philosophers, John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, had on the nature of human behavior. I have to say that I would agree with John Locke, in that humans can be trusted with freedom to do the right thing and respect others. I believe that people mean well. For that reason, I feel that
