Courtois 1 Rhodes Courtois Dr. Ruth McIntyre English1102-01 12 April 2011 The Role of Technology in Road Collisions The use of technology in cars to assure the safety of drivers is not a new  concept. A sound that goes on when the seatbelt is not on, or the handbrake not  completely down is a truly annoying experience. Yet this is one of the many ways car  manufacturers use technology to make driving safer. In addition, manufacturers  have developed new technologies which allow cars to communicate with other cars  when they sense a risk of collision, without the involvement of the driver. Like the  majority of equipment we use, cars have become digitalized. But, unlike other  technologies that are meant for entertainment like mp3 players, this technology  prevents accidents.  Aside from car manufacturers, other industries are responsible for  technologies that cause distractions of driver. An example would be the  manufacturers of cell phones, an electronic device use widely worldwide. According  to Adrian Lund, president of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, “nine out of

Courtois 2 ten crashes were caused by driver error which means for some reason people were  not paying attention to where they were going” (Lund Interview). Although it has  been proven that the use of technology in automobiles is helpful in preventing road  collisions, I simply wish to point out that technology is not always effective and  sometimes causes, rather than prevents, collisions. That being said, technology is  not going to disappear. Therefore, we need to learn how to make it safe. In this  paper, I will analyze the role of technology in car collisions in order to determine  how to make it better. The main reason technology is used in cars is to reduce the amount of road  accidents. This goal is achieved through the use of electronic devices installed in the  cars that alert the driver when there is a potential danger. For example, Ford Motor  Corporation manufactured a car which makes a sound that “alerts the driver if  there is less than seventy-five miles left in the tank, if the seatbelt is not on, and  when passing a designated speed limit of forty-five, fifty-five or sixty-five miles per  hour” (“Ford’s MyKey” 24). There are many benefits to this technology considering  the fact that not every driver pays attention to the dashboard to check if the gas  light is on or what speed he is going. Personally, I know I never pay any attention to  the dashboard and neither do my friends. I am either listening to music, engaged in
