Environment and Politics Prof. Karmen 29 November 2010 NGO: Renewable Energy Long Island The local NGO known as ‘RELI’ is a non-profit organization in favor of the establishment and protection of all alternative energy sources. Their goal is to open up as many forms of green energy to Long Island as is currently possible. RELI is currently promoting Wind and Solar, while also encouraging efficient use of traditional energy within the American household. Energy-saving tips are available on their website, and are applicable to Businesses and Government Offices as well. The organization is currently sponsoring a number of wonderful programs aimed at accomplishing their goal of green renewable energy for all. The more notable programs include: WindWorks - a joint program with LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) that focuses specifically on making wind turbines a common sight on the Island. Unlike many other interest groups in favor of Wind power, RELI advocates the use of small (also called “backyard”) turbines – which typically produce 100 kilowatts or less, and can be plugged into the utility grid.
