ASSIGNMENT: ETHNIC GROUPS AND DISCRIMINATION 2 Assignment: Ethnic Groups and Discrimination One of the ethnic groups that I would identify with would be the Irish Immigrants; I am mainly Irish with a small amount of Hispanic. I know that the Irish went through a lot before and after they migrated to the U.S. and have done historical research before and found it very interesting. Irish people began to migrate to America during 1845. The main reason that the Irish came to America was for food and work so that they could survive. Their country was being plagued by the potato famine (otherwise known as the Great Potato Rot) ( Oracle Think Quest, 2010 ). Being that the potato was the main source of food for the people of Ireland they had to make a choice migrate or starve. In the first year of the potato famine 40% of the crop was wiped out, and 100% of the crop in the following year ( Henahan, 1993 ). This caused over a million people to die of starvation. The people who did not die from starvation were faced with making that choice. They could remain in the country which they loved, or migrate to America. Over a million people chose to migrate to America during this time for survival. The ships that were used to transport
