IV. Social Cognitive Perspective A. Learned Helplessness dogs Phase I – Dogs were exposed to shock 1.  Control group – no shock 2.  Controlled shock group – these dogs  could turn off a shock once it started 3.  Uncontrolled shock group – these  dogs had no control over shock once it

Phase II In Phase II all dogs could escape a shock by  simply jumping over a barrier.  However,  the dogs in group 3 never learned how to  do this.  In other words, their previous  experience with shock that they could not  control affected their ability to learn  something new.  I.e. that they now could  escape the shock.  This is called learned  helplessness.
