Nadine Leah Hurd CHEM-136 Professor Boyke February 2, 2008 Atomic Structure Pre-Lab Study Questions 1. Describe the set up of the periodic table. The horizontal rows on the periodic table are periods. Vertical columns are known as groups. These contain elements that have similar physical and chemical properties. The groups are numbered across the top of the table. In the periodic table there is dark zigzag line. To the left of the zigzag line are metals and nonmetals are to the right of the line. Halogens and noble gases are the last two groups on the right side of the table. Alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are the first two groups. Transition elements are located in the center box of the table. 2. Where are the alkali metals and the halogens located on the periodic table? The alkali metals are located in Group 1A (1) on the periodic table, while the halogens are located in Group A (17). 3. On the following list of elements: Mg, Cu, Br, Ag, Ni, Cl, Fe, and F, list the transition elements Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe
