Read the article below. The state of college athletics - Feb 24, 2009 | posted by: Ryan Powell The words "economic downturn" have become a popular phrase, and one that I use almost daily in my stories. It's tough to stay  positive amid all the media reports about institutions eliminating sports programs, athletics departments slashing budgets and  people losing their jobs.  Are things really this bad, or does the media focus to closely on the negative stories?  Colleges and universities (big and small) are being forced to reexamine how they operate, and make tough cost-cutting decisions.  Athletics departments are not immune from these cuts.  Lost amid the negative media coverage are all the great things college and universities continue to do for student-athletes.
