FALL 2010 MAC1140 STUDENT GUIDE AIM SECTIONS 2702, 8661, 8711 Section: 2702 Instructor: Graham Picklesimer Course Website: http://www.math.ufl.edu/~gwp ; http://www.math.ufl.edu/~chui E-mail: [email protected] Office: LIT 405 Office Hours: T6, R5-6 Telephone: (352) 392-0281 ext. 299 COURSE CONTENT: MAC1140 is a review of the algebra necessary for success in calculus. Students who pass MAC1140 have satisfied the prerequisites for MAC2233, Survey of Calculus. Students wishing to take MAC2311, Calculus I, must also take MAC1114, Trigonometry. You can replace MAC1140/MAC1114 with the single semester, much faster paced course MAC1147 if you wish to advance directly to MAC2311. You may not earn credit for MAC1140/1114 if you already have credit for MAC1147, and vice-versa. Students who need this course only to satisfy a Gordon Rule or general education requirement may wish to instead consider MGF1106 or MGF1107 instead. Alternatively, the online MAC1105 College Algebra course is available each fall and spring. TEXT BOOK AND ACCESS CODE: The required textbook is the 2nd Edition of Precalculus with Limits by Larson and Hostetler. A custom copy for this course is available from the UF bookstore. You have many options to purchase, but you MUST make sure you have either a hard or electronic copy of the textbook, as well as access to Webassign. Currently, the cheapest option is to purchase the eBook with the Webassign access code (ISBN: 9780538738101), which costs $68 (plus tax) at the UF bookstore. A solution manual is available for purchase, as well. Copies of the text book and solutions manual are on reserve in the Education Library in Norman Hall and in the Science library. Webassign provides a two-week grace period to use the online homework system before you must purchase the access code. LECTURES: Lectures meet Monday through Friday, five days a week. Lecture outlines are available online at http://www.math.ufl.edu/~chui , where you can print them out for free, or you may purchase them from the Target Copy Center across the
