Exchange with the environment • An animal’s size and shape directly affect how it exchanges energy and materials with its surroundings • Exchange occurs as substances dissolved in the aqueous medium diffuse and are transported across the cells’ plasma membranes • For unicellular organisms (and very small animals), exchanging material with the environment occurs by simple diffusion

Exchange with the environment • For larger animals, this poses a challenge… • Food, nutrients, and oxygen must be delivered to all cells of the organism, and CO 2 and wastes must be removed • Thus, evolution’s solution to this problem (circulation) will dominated the body plan of all animals • Also, animals must provide an aqueous environment for all cells!
