Soci 1001 9/8/2010 Research Methods – depends on the question that you are asking - Experimental method o The researcher manipulates one factor or variable affecting the subjects in the experimental group and then compares the results with the subjects in a control group who were not exposed to the manipulated factor o Does x,y,z make a difference? Problems: Laboratories are not natural settings, and subjects who have been randomly selected into experimental groups are not natural groups Potential for introducing harm to human subjects Violation of subjects right to free will and self- determination if they are not told they are subjects of an experiment - - Participant observation o A form of field observation in which the researcher participates to some degree in the lives of the people being observed Problems If the researcher tells the subjects what he or she is doing it may alter their behavior or refuse to participate If th researcher does NOT tell the subjects what he or
