Cell phone, mac, uggs, ipod, anything that represents the culture Conventional Definition - Culture o Is a society’s shared way of life that is handed down from generation to generation, and acts as the glue that holds members of society together. It is sometimes shared and frequently challenged by subordinate groups Socially constructed by dominants in society and are passed on Norms - The standards that define the obligatory and expected behaviors of people in various situations. Culture Shock - The sensation we experience when our unconscious expectations for behavior are violated o Ex. Bear Grills eating maggots on TV because that’s what people eat in Africa Folkways - The least formal or important norms and involve the everyday conventional routines and perceptions of how we should and should not behave - Violations of folkways are commonly met with weak or inconsequential sanctions
