Ad Ldsp 732  Wednesday, February 02, 2011 School Politics Steve Kircher Political Issue Proposal A political issue I’d like to research that has surfaced at my school is Merit Pay  and whether or not Merit Pay could work.  Since becoming a teacher I’ve been  interested in the subject of Merit Pay and whether or not it’s an effective incentive and  how a school or school district can determine the efficacy of its teachers and how it can  be done. Most recently the Washington, DC school district has proposed using Merit Pay.  I’d like to look at the Washington, DC proposal and see how they plan on implementing  Merit Pay.  I initially heard about the D.C. proposal on NPR’s  Morning Edition

Unformatted text preview: and have found the original program recording on-line. In Washington DC, they currently have a starting salary of about $40,000 per year. They plan on implementing a system that would reward top performing first-year teachers at almost double that-up to about $78,000 per year. The system is based upon student achievement, basically test scores. An interesting point I’ve found from the Washington proposal is that the money will come from private sources. I’d like to explore the history of merit pay, learn about the different types of merit pay, see if it has ever worked in the past, and see if such a system would work at my high school....
