BILD 18 19:03 Human Impact on the Earth: Pollution What is a pollutant? o Something that is not where it is “wanted”, like a weed only much worse! o Includes hear, noise, microorganisms, compounds that we recognize as  toxic, like pesticides or industrial chemicals o But can include relatively benign compounds such as carbon dioxide Something that should concern you o Japan’s ocean radiation hits 7.5 million times legal limit o The operator of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Tuesday  that it had found radioactive iodine at 7.5 million times the legal limit in a  seawater sample taken near the facility Our Situation o Pollution to Error, is Human Forgiveness, in this case, is not divine! o If we don’t clear the Error, we will suffer and even die. o As Pogo says “We have met the enemy and he is us.” What Happened? o Millions of people have died and will die from Anthopogenic (man-made)  pollution! o Assumptions that science and industry know what is best and have the  answers are not always valid. o Politics is the “wildcard” in this game.  Many situations such as global  warming are “trumped” by special interests.  You can help prevent this! o CA vehicle emission standards disallowed by EPA! HR 4572 Feb 2010 o The Clean Air Act is amended by adding the following at the end thereof:  ‘The term ‘air pollutant’ shall not include any of the following solely on the  basis of its effect on global climate change: Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous oxide, Hydrofluorocarbons,  Perfluorocarbons, Sulfur hexafluoride
