House of Commons Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 November 12, 2010 McMaster University Students 1280 Main Street West Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L8 To the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment, This letter is written by a group of students from McMaster University that wish to express our concern over the potential impact of the invasive species of Asian Carp entering the Great Lakes ecosystem. Many invasive species have already preceded the potential Asian carp invasion, which may give clues as to how we might deal with the possibility of Asian carp making their way into Canadian territory. As you are aware of, a number of other notable species have infested North America, including Asian long-horned beetles, zebra mussels, as well as the purple loosestrife plant. Thankfully, the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister’s Aquatic Invasive Species Task Group has been created in the hopes of allowing any further introduction and spread of invasive aquatic species into Canadian boundaries.
