Death Penalty I believe that the death penalty can be a deterrent to crime, however for the most part I don’t believe it to be. I would have to assume there have been instances when a person is about to make a decision on a violent crime and their minds are changed when the thought of the death penalty enters their head. This could also happen when planning a crime and the criminal stops to think about the consequences and decides to abolish the plan. As Dr. Van Deng Haag stated, ” People fear nothing more than death. Therefore, nothing will deter a criminal more than the fear of death. Death is final. But where there is life there is hope. .. Wherefore, life in prison is less feared. Murderers clearly prefer it to execution -- otherwise, they would not try to be sentenced to life in prison instead of death” (Van Deng Haag, 1983). In some instances I do believe the death penalty can be a deterrent but looking at the over all picture I don’t believe it is. I agree firmly with the death penalty.
