1. Franz Boas o First to challenge Scientific Racism of the late 1800’s o A Ph.D in Physics while a student in Germany o Scar on his face, dueling event. o Went to the Arctic to study the effects of the arctic environment. Eskimos, Inuits. o After finishing his research, he immigrated to the U.S. o Racial tension was peaking in the U.S. in the 1880’s - Anglo-Americans were widely unhappy with the arrival of new immigrant groups. o Anglo American scientists claim that non-anglo immigrants are racially inferior Skull sizes, craniometry studies. Study of the shape of the head. The head sizes of immigrant children were often smaller than American born anglo-children. - Franz Boas – 1896 – “On The Growth of Children.” o He noted that the skills of immigrant children were smaller than Anglo-American children when first arrived. Skull sizes rose when they lived overtime. o Overtime the differences disappeared. o The skull sizes were due to environment (Nutrition) not racially significant differences. Less-fed. o He continued to study Native American indigenous groups in the pacific northwest. o Studied Quielute, Bella Coila, Salish, Kwakiute. Based on Twilight. o Developed the “unilineal perspective.” o Developed the four-field approach of Anthropology (Now the most common form of anthropology in the US) o To challenge the Unilinealist perspective. - Historical Particularism o Each society has its own particular history. - Four fields of Anthropology o Physical Anthropology Boas wanted to use this to show that all races are fully intelligent, fully “evolved,” humans. There is no inferior human race. No reason to divide superior/inferior. o
