Shelby L. Smith 10-4-10 Professor Kennedy EH 102 Face the Music Beats, Rhythms, and even the high notes that make you squint, the joys of music can be found everywhere. From our earliest of days when our mothers sang us sweet English lullabies, to our latest of years when we are comforted by familiar hymns, there is no denying that music is a very large part of who we are. For me, music has been the cornerstone around which I will base my life, but for others it is no more that words in the air. No matter how you view it though, there is no denying the benefits of early music on the lives of children who engage in it. This is why my claim is as follows; Music education causes children to develop exceptional linguistic, analytical, and critical thinking skills, which can lead to the solving of today’s social issues. I chose this topic for many reasons, not the least of which is that I myself do adore

Unformatted text preview: music. I view it a self-expression completely my own, a frontier where I can truly be who I am and who I want to be instead of who society says I should be. Unfortunately, I come from a small town where music education is slowly being phased out of the learning curriculum. Long gone are the days of high school choirs and now even the elementary school music program is being threatened. At this time my old high school is also going through state review because its test scores are not “up to par”. To me, the loss of the music program is directly affecting these test scores and I believe that if the music program were to be reinstated, there would be an increase in the passing grades. It’s time for my school, and several around the country, to buck up and face the music....
