Lecture 8-31-10 Unique Features of Archaeology in “New World”: 1. Racist; anti-American Indian thinking of early 19 century American and  European scholars dominated early development of the discipline. 2. Antiquity legislation in North America is unique and differs from most other  countries. 3. Many contemporary Native Americans don’t trust Western scholarship (or  anthropologist) to interpret their past/history/culture. 4. Archaeology in North America usually involves non-native digging up the past  of others. This week’s readings: C+C Chapter 2 T+K Chapter 2 (pages 24-27) Next week Tuesday and Thursday bring an archaeology news item and summary  to class and be ready to share. Summary should be 1 (paragraph or page?).  Answer who, what, when, where, and why this is interesting.
