Lecture, 8-21-10
Final Points:
Pre-Clovis hinges on small number of sites
*need to find widespread patterns of occupation
*Earliest such patterns still Clovis
Possible that small groups migrated from several origins (Europe, Southeast
Asia) before Paleoindian migration at end of Pleistocene
*early populations die off, or absorbed by later migrant populations?
Political and Prestige motivations of instigators also a factor
Modern Native Americans tend to reject any archeological explanation of their
origins.
More Paleoindian:
3 distinct adaptations based on lithic technology
Clovis- 11, 500-9,000 BC Nationwide
Folsom- 9,000-8,000 BC with the most kill site only in plains region
Plano- 8,000-5,000 BC with the most kill sites only in plains region
Anzik site: Montana
Younger Dryas- 12,800-11,500 ya
