Water movement in soil Water starts off in the soil. It is absorbed from the soil by the root hairs by osmosis. Root hairs have a cell membrane with a high surface area to volume ratio to efficiently absorb water, mineral ions and oxygen and excrete carbon dioxide. Root hairs project into the soil particles, which are surrounded by soil water at high water potential, compared to the low water potential of the content of the root hairs. Water movement depends on the soil texture the three types being sand, silt and clay. Soil content affects soil behavior, including the retention capacity for nutrients and water. Sand and silt are the products of physical weathering , while clay is the product of chemical weathering . Clay content has retention capacity for nutrients and water. Clay soils resist wind and water erosion better than silty and sandy soils, because the particles are more tightly joined to each other. There is no life on earth without water. Life almost certainly originated in water. Then how water comes out from soil? The obvious influences such as the amount of soil and the amount of water added to it will certainly limit how much water the soil can hold and the amount able to pass through.
