History 8 Introduction to Latin American History Paper Assignment Paper Proposal: Due May 5, 2011 at the beginning of class Due May 26, 2011 at the beginning of class The paper assignment is in two parts: a written proposal of 500-600 words (2 – 2.5 pages) due May 5, 2011, and the final paper 1300-1400 words (5-6 pages) due May 26, 2011. The paper assignment is designed to be an exercise in analytical thinking and effective writing. Your essay will examine a major theme in Latin American history and be based on the primary source documents in the required weekly documents. Your paper should be written for the intelligent but uninformed reader. You must have a sustained argument, not merely a compilation of facts piled one upon another. Your paper must have a THESIS, that is, what you are arguing. State it in the FIRST paragraph. The rest of the paper should be a substantiation of your thesis. Do not ignore evidence that contradicts your thesis. Potential topics for the paper: 1. The role of the indigenous in Latin American history 2. The role of religion in Latin American history 3. U.S. – Latin American relations 4. Latin Americans critique world power relations 5. Latin Americans assess Latin America (e.g., Bolívar, José Martí) 6. Other. Consult your TA. You may not do a topic that is not on the list without explicit permission from your TA. Policy on late papers:
