Chris Kim ASAM 125 Prof. Harsha September 30, 2009 Paper Angels: Write Up Paper Angels, written by Genny Lim, is a play about the detention of Chinese immigrants in Angel Island and their struggles to escape the damned place. Lim does the story justice by helping the reader picture himself being in the situation such as the dormitories that the Chinese Immigrants were held in. After reading the first several pages of the play, I got a sense that the setting was like a prison, with the guards, but later I realized that it was a detention camp for immigrants. I never imagined what kind of life Chinese Immigrants lived during their attempts to enter the United States, specifically San Francisco, California. Reading this play makes me think about how fortunate all of us Asian-American citizens are to be born as citizens and not have to worry about sneaking in through the border like what happened back then and is still happening in today in Mexico.
