Dance 110 Vocabulary: Space Be sure to study the diagram of the stage space in your textbook if you are unfamiliar with the terms for various locations on the stage. Know spelling and the order of the words. stage directions – words used in the theater to indicate various parts of the stage. (See the diagram on p. 28. Some of them are also defined below.) stage right – the side of the stage to the performers’ right, to the audience’s left stage left – the side of the stage to the performers’ left, to the audience’s right center stage – center of the stage upstage – the part of the stage farthest away from the audience downstage – the part of the stage closest to the audience upstage right – the corner of the stage furthest away from the audience and on their left. downstage left – the corner of the stage closest to the audience and on their right. backstage – off stage, the part of the theater behind the curtains, also includes dressing rooms pathway (or floor pattern) – the path a dancer or dancers trace as they move through space
