Part A According to Sternberg’s triangular theory of love, the three dimensions are intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy encompasses feelings of closeness, connectedness and bondedness. Passion encompasses drives that lead us to romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation. Commitment encompasses, in the short term, the decision to remain with another, and in the long term, the shared achievements and plans made that other. The amount of love experienced depends on the strength of these three components. The type of love experienced depends on the strength of the type of love. There are different types of love that will have one of the components or all three. Liking/friendship would have the component of intimacy, where the consummate love will have all three components. When the three components are put into a triangle the different types of love are all connected on the triangle. The consummate love parallels the unfolding of secure attachment. For one to feel consummate love they must fell all three of the components of the triangle. The passion associated with physical closeness grows very quickly and initially dominates a relationship. Over time though it declines. Proximity and passion prompt reciprocal sharing and caring, and a healthy love relationship shows a slow but steady increase in intimacy. Commitment involves both a short term decision to love someone and a longer term decision to maintain the love. In enduring relationships, the increase in commitment is gradual at first, accelerates, and then remains at a high level. Passion for both men and women is a mutual attraction-love that tops the list of important traits for choosing a mate. Being in love is different from love. According to the
