MIDTERM #1: 1) Explain in detail the difference, and the connection, between NIRGUNA and SAGUNA Brahman. In Hinduism, Brahman, the ultimate reality, can be divided into two Brahman is split up into 2: NIR GUNA (no distinguishing attributes), and SA GUNA (with distinguishing attributes) (guna is a quality or distinguishing attribute) gunee – someone who has many distinguishing attributes Brahman – the ultimate reality (originally meant hymn or prayer…its root is ‘to grow’) Another term is called Saccidananda (Sa [truth…reality] + Cit [awareness… spiritual] + Ananda [bliss…soul]) which applies to both SA and NIR relatively – the ‘so what’ is explained by this ‘Brahm’ is something worthwhile – this description of Brahma converts facts into value Next question…A) SAT is it real or is it unreal? B) CIT There are material objects that you experience …It’s real but it’s immaterial in nature. C) ANANDA But is it one or many? (are atoms in a molecule considered one or several). If there are 2 things, one can always detract bliss from the other. It’s only when the thing is by itself can it experience bliss. Therefore it’s one and not many. There’s a passage in the Upanishads that says ‘it’s from the other that fear arises’ In itself, Nirguna and Saguna can’t be described, only through saccidananda For example in sleep…you can say I had a really good sleep. But during, you have no distinction Brahman is a nice feeling ‘raised to the Nth power’ o Ulti mate reality can be divided into 2 – one without attributes (Nirguna) and one with attributes (Saguna) – so is the ultimate reality with or without – big debate (like president vs. presidency which one do you need more?) o Tho se who believe Nirgun as the ultimate reality that it has Saguna aspect, and vice versa o Thi nk about Mount Rushmore… One side that has the faces and the other without, but it’s still the same rock (same about nir and sa) o A chalk eraser has distinguishing qualities like most objects o Spa ce doesn’t … We know that material objects appear in immaterial things NIRGUNA o The
