L16 Translation: Health and Insurance By Dr. Michelle Smith Z: Lisa, I won’t be able to accompany you to the movie this Friday. I have to go to the airport to pick up my auntie. She is coming to our university hospital to see a doctor. L: Which auntie? Z: The one from Toronto. L: Why doesn’t she go see a doctor in Canada? I heard that the Canadian medical insurance is very good. Their hospitals are rather good too. Doesn’t she have to pay herself if she comes here to see a doctor? Z: The Canadian health insurance system is indeed rather good. Everybody has insurance. But if it is not an urgent case, one has to wait for a long time to see a doctor. Although my auntie’s heart problem is not too serious, she is not willing to wait any longer. In addition she heard that the cardiology department in our university hospital is very famous, therefore she has decided to come and have the operation here. I heard that many Canadians come to the US for medical treatment. L: But if you are poor, you will feel that the American medical system is not as good as
