Exam 1 Essay Topics 1) W.E.B. DuBois called Reconstruction “a splendid failure.” Similarly, plans to build a New South economy based on industrialization, commerce, and diversified farming failed to achieve desired goals. Write an essay about the South from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19 th century . Your essay should identify the major aspects of Reconstruction , how and why Congress hoped to reconstruct the South. You should evaluate the successes and failures of Reconstruction and explain how and when Reconstruction ended. You should then discuss and evaluate the plans for a New South . a) Intro i) Reconstruction is an unrealistic idea from the start ii) Attempting to totally change the established economy of part of the nation iii) Attempting to make blacks equal to whites too soon after slavery iv) Too much reform too soon without financial means to perpetuate it b) Major aspects of reconstruction i) Racial Equality (1) Incorporating blacks into citizenship (2) Protecting rights of Freed slaves ii) Restoring economy of Southern states (1) Getting the states back on their feet (2) Removing confederate influence from government (3) Installing governments that would support 13 th and 14 th amendments c) How and why? i) Why (1) War took a massive toll on southern economy (2) Post-civil war north hoped to unite north and south (3) South is poorest part of the nation, with cotton now being an international industry (a) South had to divert focus on agrarian economy during the war, the rest of the world began to provide for themselves
