11/22/10 Notes ch.3 Virtue of character Review - 3 primary senses of good - To a virtuous person not only did the right thing but got pleasure out of doing it - Pleasure and pain are involved Ch.4 - if ur already doing the thing that just then doesn’t that mean that you have the virtue - answer - you can do the right thing for the wrong reasons - if you’re doing the right thing (virtue)without realizing ur doing the right thing then ur missing out on the virtue - It does matter the attitude you do things - If you just share bc its morally right - Or if you share cake because you want to and your happy to share - Consistency is a part of this bc you developed a virtue of actions Ch.5 -the reason why you can do the right thing bc you want to but bc you have to do it bc its morally right (isn’t good) -nothing valuable about effort The virtues- character is what we judge the basics of Feelings Predisposition Active conditions -Predisposition- some people are naturally moved to pity
