Caffrey Francis September 9, 2010 Dr. Mcquillan T/Th /Time: 4:30-5:45 In The Odyssey of Homer , Homer portrays Odysseus as a war hero who desperately wants to get back home to his family. In Odysseus journey home, he went through many turbulent times from being held captive on Ogygia, Kalypso’s island, to Poseidon trying to drown him in the sea, and washing up on Phaiakia Island but through all of this Odysseus has persevered. Above all, Odysseus is driven by his love, courage, and determination to get back home. Athene desperately wants her favorite mortal Odysseus to come back to his home land, so she begs Zeus to bring him back. Zeus sends Hermes to Ogygia Island to tell Kalypso to set Odysseus free. When Hermes finds Odysseus he is found weeping by the water, “His eyes were never wiped dry of tears, and the sweet lifetime was draining out of him, as he wept for a way home, since the nymph was no longer pleasing to him (92)”.After eight years of being held captive by Kalypso, Hermes finds Odysseus by the sea distraught about being away from his
