Caffrey Francis September 9, 2010 Dr. T/Th /Time: 4:30-5:45 In The Odyssey of Homer , Odysseus is driven by his determination, courage, and love, more so then the gods’ will, to get back home. Throughout Odysseus’s journey the gods helped him takeoff home, avoid troubles along the way, and told him how to deal with future situations. Athene is the closest god to Odysseus. She desperately wants him to come back to his home land so she begs Zeus to bring him back. Zeus sends Hermes to set Odysseus free from Kalypso and he is found weeping by the water. Although the gods helped Odysseus it is his own self that brings him home. Odysseus has went through many turbulent times from being held captive on Ogygia, Kalypso’s island to Poseidon trying to drown him in the sea and washing up on Phaiakia island but through all of this Odysseus has persevered.
