1 Caffrey Francis February 2, 2011 Dr. Griffin MWF 10:00-10:50 AM Title In Don Quixote , Cervantes tells the story of Don Quixote, a man who loses his sanity and becomes enchanted by reading chivalric novels about knighthood. Through this he discovers his purpose in life which is to become a knight-errant and to spread justice to others. Unfortunately, the discovery of his purpose leads him to live in his own knight-errant fantasy. In the novel, Notes from Underground, Dostoevsky tells of an anonymous man who loses his mind because he becomes absorbed by idealistic, philosophy, and romantic books he reads. This makes him realize that people do not have a purpose in life. This realization makes him not care about the outcome of situations and live in his own fantasy. In the novels, Don Quixote and Notes from Underground , both characters lives are influenced by the books they have read in different ways; finds their purpose in life, and live in their own fantasy worlds.
