LECTURE 11: QUANTITATIVE TRAIT LOCI MAPPING (QTL MAPPING) CASE STUDY: Case study: mimulus flower colour OVERVIEW We looked at quantitative traits earlier and saw that these are determined by multiple genes and influenced by the environment. Heritability is a measurement the amount of phenotypic variation that can be attributed to genetic variation, but it tells us nothing about how many genes or the identity of the contributing genes. QTL mapping is a way of identifying the many loci that contribute to a quantitative trait. We will look at an example of flower colour in the Mimulus flower and also at human height in humans. In particular we will see how researchers use Genome Wide Association Studies to find genes that contribute to quantitative traits and diseases.
