Cole Breiner LACS 1/25/11 Immigration *Guest worker program- come to US and work and then go home Globals, Locals, and Mobils *The core consumes resources *Globals can travel legally with documents *Locals go through life within 25 miles of where they were born -Extreme poverty *Mobils are born into poverty possibly but then they realize the economic opportunities elsewhere Braceros program- give Mexican workers temporary VISAs and would get paid at Mexican banks after working sessions in the US. - A lot of the workers didn’t get paid - Disbanded without a solution to the agricultural labor problem *Soldiers after WWII aren’t going back to Agricultural work *Once migrants have citizenship, they aren’t going back *NAFTA- 60 miles, VISA *Border Patrol Strategic Plan: -Moving border agents from cities to deserts -Increase in document fraud= false papers -Increase in death rates -Deacrease in populated area arrests *Immigration Protests(April 10, 2006) *Secure Fence Act * “A line in the Sand” Congressional Report -Can’t just arrest everybody, focus on criminals Changes in Cabinet -Janet Napolitano (Homeland Security) -Alan Bersin (Border Czar) *Gwynne Dyer- Fight over water and land Periphery Countries: Produce raw materials but have minimal resources, and don’t live wealthy
