You can go three days without drinking before death The motivation is to keep from dehydrating 2 ways we obtain water: o Drinking o Eating Ways to LOSE water: o Sweating o Urinating o Blood loss (unusual) o Crying (unusual) o Evaporation from most areas in your body o Exhaling o Talking o Bowl movement. There are some animals that have to conserve water. They don’t sweat and their poop is stone dry. They also tend to move very slowly. They can lose 40% of their body weight We (humans) store up water by eating and drinking at the same time. When you eat food you are going to have more solutes (salts) there always has to be a balance of water and salts. Because salts suck the water from your cells. You know when you will have water again. All this is a learned behavior. What creates the drive to drink? One old theory is the dry mouth theory. “Walter Cannon” It is true when our mouths are dry we get thirsty. However they numbed people’s mouth and they still got thirsty. There are times when our mouths are dry and we do drink. People would but pebbles in their mouth and trick themselves to believing they aren’t thirsty. The most famous experiment is sham drinking experiment. They implanted a straw, fistula, into a dog that would take all the water out of the stomach and dump it out. The dog was able to hydrate its mouth but it never quenched his throat. This disproved the “dry mouth” theory and and proved
