Names Problem Statement Rear end collisions, which occur when the front bumper of a car strikes the back bumper of the car in front of it, are the most common type of automobile accident. Over 2.5 million rear end collisions are reported annually, according to the National Safety Council. While usually not causing serious injury, these incidents can cause significant damage to the bumper of an automobile. Scratches, dents, or cracks often lead to costly replacement of the bumper. In 5mph collision tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, average bumper damage costs were $741 for midsize vehicles and were $1151 for sport utility vehicles. The expense and trouble of damage repair or bumper replacement is a hassle that many drivers would prefer to do without. Project Goals The goal of this project is to design a more effective bumper with improved resistance to cracking, denting, scratching, etc. Ultimately, the bumper should be appreciably more absorbent of impact energy during low speed collisions. The impact absorbance would also help eliminate damage to internal components such as the radiator. This would result in lower costs for the manufacturer and consumer alike. Bumpers currently on the market Today's automobile bumpers are generally made with a reinforcement bar of steel, aluminum, fiberglass composite or plastic shielded by a plastic cover.
