BIO 119 McCague File-020 Exercise VIII Purpose: To study the histology of the gastro-intestinal tract. Materials: Cross-sections of: 1. Oesophagus 2. Cardia of stomach 3. Stomach of a cat 4. Pylorus 5. Duodenum of a dog 6. Illeum 7. Injected small intestine 8. Colon 9. Peyer’s Patches 10. Islets of Langerhans 11. Muscle layers of small Intestine (low power) 12. Villi showing absorbing mechanisms 13. Submaxillary gland 14. Sublingual gland 15. Parotid gland All slides used for demonstration are to study in the same position unless changed by the instructor. In your notebook each section demonstrated is to be represented and labeled . Procedure: 1. Everyone in class will have a cross-section of Illeum. Identify the four main layers. Draw. Identify goblet cells, identify a villus. Find a lacteal and capillary. Note the secreting cells of the villi. Draw a typical villus. 2. Study the type of epithelium in the slide of oesophagus. Note the pavement arrangement. Note the difference in staining quality of the cells near the periphery
