BIO 119 McCague File-021 Exercise IX Purpose: To study some of the properties of Urine. 1. Note the color, odor and transparency. 2. Specific Gravity Almost fill a urinometer and determine the specific gravity. On the basis of this reading and the total volume determine the total solids in the urine excreted per day. Compare the results on the four different diets. 3. Filter about 35 m. of urine. a. If there is any precipitate on filter paper, transfer it to slide and study it under the microscope. b. Filtrate I. To 5 cc of filtered urine in a test tube, introduce 5 cc of concentrate nitric acid (HNO 3 ) below it. Be careful! Note ring between the two liquids. If it is white, albumen is present. II. To 5 cc of filtered urine add 1 cc of Fehling’s solution, boil and note color changes or ppt. This is test for reducing substances or usually sugar. Compare results in the different diets. III. The rest of the filtrate is to be used in four. 4.
