BIO 119 McCague File-022 Exercise X Purpose: A. To study the structure of cartilage and bone. B. To study the changes of rat bone in Ricketts. Materials: 1. Rachitic and control rats 2. 2% Silver Nitrate 3. Acetene 4. Crystallizing dishes 5. Prepared slides of a. Cartilage (Hyaline and Elastic) b. Bone 6. Single edged razor blades 7. Skeleton Procedure: 1. Young male wealing rats were divided into 2 groups. One was fed a complete diet for 4 weeks and represents the control. The second group were fed following diet ad libitum: Yellow Corn Meal 76 grams Wheat Gluten 20 grams Calcium Carbonate 3 grams Sodium Chloride 1 gram At the end of 4 weeks the rats were sacrificed with ether. The femur and tibia were dissected out incised about half way between the knee joint and distal ends. The knee joint was disarticulated. The single-edged razor blade was used to cut 4 or 6 slides of each tibia and femur. The slices were placed in acetene for 15 to 30 minutes; in distilled water for 5 to 10 minutes and then into 2% AgNO
